Chucky: The Complete 7-Movie Collection (1988-2017) - Blu-ray

5 beersKids and corporations go hand-in-hand. Don’t believe me? Just watch any cartoon show and count the number of commercials tailored for them. It should be no secret; Corporations DEPEND on their brand being imprinted upon these tiny tots and the earlier the better. In my mind, this makes Chucky (voiced by Brad Dourif), our most favorite Good Guys doll, one of the most malleable and effective cinematic psychos out there.

America’s youth are often targets of all kinds of branding. In the halls of horror, though, there are few films that take that blind acceptance in this society and turn it into a physical threat. That’s merely one way in which the ongoing Child’s Play series, now seven films deep, gets its strength from.   The other HAS TO come from Douriff’s voice work as the foul-mouthed Good Guys doll who only wants to kill, kill, kill his way out his plastic trappings.

Chucky is a living nightmare. Almost immediately upon Child’s Play release, a franchise was born. All the damn doll needed was a couple of good line deliveries from Dourif and, BOOM, a pop cultural phenom of terror was unleashed upon audiences. There are few moments in the 1980’s output of horror titles as effective as the opening minutes of Tom Holland’s Child’s Play. Serial-killer Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif), wearing a righteous brown trench coat, is being chased through the dingy streets of south Chicago by homicide detective Mike Norris (Chris Sarandon) when shots are fired. Ray is fatally wounded and, after breaking into a toy store, starts chanting some evil spell, and winds up sending his soul into a Good Guys doll named Chucky.

Chucky is ALIVE. Wanna play?

That was 1988 and Child’s Play was the horror hit few saw coming. Two years later, Child’s Play 2 was released and fans came out to make that film another success. And so it goes with Child's Play 3 which was largely dismissed by the press as rubbish. It looks damn new again here.

And then we get actress Jennifer Tilly in the series to give a new spark and a new appeal as we slip into naughty horror parody. With Bride of Chucky, Seed of Chucky, Curse of Chucky and now Cult of Chucky, we get a rebirth of such which allows us more laughter, more kills, and a groovy kick to the seat of our pants; all of which are contained in Universal’s NEW 1080p Blu-ray 7-disc set.

Designed to resemble the Good Guys box the doll was originally sold in, Chucky: The Complete 7-movie Collection– especially if you watch the movies back to back – is a damn revelation in its explicitness with detailing how a franchise evolves in order to remain engaging. The movies form a bridge of sorts between eras and, as there is still a lot of life left in the doll, give us a great look at how it could carry on.

This icon of horror STILL sells t-shirts and toys and STILL frightens audiences with its genuine creepiness. It’s a spooky idea and, as handled here with a good amount of scares and chuckles along the way, is quite effective in stirring the supernatural elements surrounding it into a gooey substance of sick and stick.

Warning: Chucky: The Complete 7-movie Collection requires constant adult supervision – especially when we slide into B-movie territory once the Child’s Play moniker is dropped. Chucky wouldn't have it any other way either. Hidey-ho, friend 'til the end!

Universal Studios Home Entertainment presents Chucky: The Complete 7-movie Collection on 1080p in one collection. Fans will agree that the results are pretty damn good. While there are varying aspect ratios (from 1.85:1, 1.84:1, 1.78:1) and varying sound presentations (DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, Dolby Digital 2.0), the consistent look to the series gets a good nod from me. Colors are warmly saturated and blacks are beyond solid; even the lines have altering shades. There are textures in the walls, streets, military camp, and so on; textures in the fabric; and textures in the locations featured in the movies. Everything is blistering with crisp detail and solid sounds.
