Raging Bull

Raging Bull - THE best boxing movie available and one of the best sports movies ever. A searing biopic that leaves you feeling as beaten-up as Motta's victims.

The HustlerThe Hustler - Paul Newman as fast Eddie and Jackie Gleason as Minnesota Fats. Great acting, great direction, great script... a very elusive combination in sports movies. Much better than Color of Money, by the way.

Caddyshack

Caddyshack - The quintessential sports comedy. Everybody quotes from it. It's not so much a movie with a plot as it is a movie that features series of smaller skits with a country club as its glue.

Rocky

Rocky - One of only two sports movies to win an Oscar. Every time I watch it, it makes me lace up the ol' sneakers and go running. That lasts for about a day however.

Bang the Drum Slowly

Bang the Drum Slowly - Well acted baseball drama starring Robert DeNiro as a baseball player with Hodgkin's Disease. Many call it the Brian's Song of baseball.

Breaking Away

Breaking Away - Stars Dennis Quaid. A coming-of-age flick about youthful initiation into adulthood with bike riding at its heart. A painful depiction of adolescence.

Chariots of FireChariots of Fire - Takes a lot of work to stick with it, but rewarding nonetheless. Tells the true stories of two young men who become champions at the 1924 Paris Olympics and their religious commitments." The "other" of only two sports movies to win an Oscar.

Field fo DreamsField of Dreams - Another one that stars Kevin Costner. Are we noticing a pattern here? A fantasy story with a poetic, dreamy feel to it. Not a traditional baseball movie.

The Natural

The Natural - Accurately depicts that mystical allure that surrounds the great game of baseball. A Combination of beauty and baseball.

Remember the TitansRemember the Titans - Stars Denzel Washington. An effective feel-good true story that wins the heart of anyone who watches it. To a fault it is very Hollywoodized.

Slap Shot

Slap Shot - Bad movie that thrives on its cult status. Along with Caddyshack, the best sports comedy. Actually a good acting performance by Paul Newman.

The Sand Lot

The Sandlot - A bit of a sleeper. A touching little feel-good that's for the kids, but even the grown-ups will like it. A great example of how kids sometimes stretch the truth when they tell a story.

A League of their own

A League of Their Own - An ensemble cast puts this WWII-era baseball flick on the chart. And hey, the performances of Tom Hanks and Geena Davis were Oscar worthy.

the Bad News Bears

The Bad News Bears (1976) - Kelly Leak is all grown up now and looks just like Watchmen's Rorschach.

Secretariat Sports Movie

Secretariat (2010) - An inspirational event that will touch everyone - even though we already know the outcome of the race before the movie starts.

Warrior

Warrior (2011) - Not since Sylvester Stallone in Rocky has a fighting movie had such an exceptionally profound statement to say to its own era.

Moneyball

Moneyball (2011) - With the brute force of a fastball and the finesse of a well-aimed curve, Moneyball pops the leather with a triumphant true story about finding worth in uncommon places. An underdog story about how people should be judged by what they do rather than what they should do.
