DALLAS, TX - JANUARY 22, 2008 - No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood led all Oscar contenders with eight Academy Award nominations each when the announcements were made this morning in the traditional 5:30 am (PT) Hollywood press conference.
Javier Bardem looks like the closest thing to a shoe-in with his performance as a cold-blooded killer in No Country For Old Men in which he receives a nod in the best supporting actor category. There were a few surprises this year however, with Laura Linney garnering a nomination for her melancholy turn in The Savages, and with Tommy Lee Jones copping a nod for his role in In the Valley of Elah. Ratatouille seems to be the biggest dark-horse however as it picked up a nomination in the Original Screenplay category.
Even with a fairly good crop of surprises in this year's nominations, the big unknown still remains, what will the ceremony be like? Until then, chew on this list of nominees:
