Guest Review by Dan Berman
Marlene Booth has assembled a wonderful and tasteful film in this extraordinary one-hour documentary "Double Burden: Three Generations of Working Mothers". A masterful delight-which should be considered one of the finest films to hit the independent film circuit. The film takes you inside the homes of three mothers whose mission it is to put clothing on their children's backs, put food on the table and take on everyday burdens. Produced in 1992, "Double Burden" is a vividly stunning picture of what goes on when the mother has to take on everyday life and not just for herself but the entire family.
The film is the first of it's kind to demonstrate and look at the multi-generational families. It shows the highest respect toward women who have to go home every night to feed their children, but have to get up every morning to go to work. The three families consist of Mexican-American, Polish American, and an African American. It's a positive portrait toward these independent women who brave against all odds and still continue to amaze us. The film instills a great deal of respect for the accomplishments of women of various races, social classes, and life-styles.
Well displayed and brilliantly directed it has so much to offer to its audience that it will make you smile. I have seen many diverse documentaries which-are outstanding but this really has lots to offer in ways of looking at the single mother. This film pays tribute to being a mother working outside the home, a tribute that is so rightfully deserved.
The film is made for any classroom and is highly recommended for learning purposes.
Here are some of the screenings and awards include:
