Movie Review

by Frank Wilkins

Has there ever been a team of movie making technicians and artisans more skilled than the animators at Pixar? With their current release of Finding Nemo, the groundbreaking studio continues its streak of combining cutting-edge technology with from-the-heart story telling to create their best effort to date.

At the heart of the team is writer/director Andrew Stanton, who also penned or co-penned Toy Story, Toy Story II, A Bug’s Life and Monster’s Inc. Listen up Pixar…whatever you are paying this guy, double it now! I would hate for him to not have access to Pixar’s award-winning animation team and for us to not have exposure to one of the best filmmakers of the genre.

The word "formulaic" ordinarily leads to codswallup with regards to screenwriting, invoking squeamish memories of the Police Academy movies or the Three's Company television series. But Pixar's formulas work. At their most basic elements, the formulas take complex human feelings or relationships and manifest them in animals. It's that simple.

And Finding Nemo is really no different. But, although it does follow the standard Disney-magic formula, where it excels over its Pixar siblings is in its depth of emotion, its awe-inspiring panoramas and its broader assortment of characters. Everything is ratcheted up a notch, raising the bar that much more for those who follow. And what better setting for such a palette of life, than the vast expansiveness of the ocean?

In a bit of a departure for Stanton, he wrote Finding Nemo specifically to a particular character. He needed someone to help a widowed father, Marlin (voiced by Albert Brooks) find his lost son, Nemo (voiced by Alexander Gould). After watching an episode of Ellen, he immediately knew that Ellen DeGeneres would be the voice to bring that character to life. She voices Dory, a neurotic, but eternally optimistic regal Blue Tang with short-term memory loss. She happens upon Marlin, and together they embark on a perilous journey to find Marlin's son, who was snatched from the ocean by a diver.

Along their journey they encounter a varied assortment of characters and hazardous situations. And don't think for a moment that Pixar wouldn't take advantage of the largest hodgepodge of characters this side of a kid's toy box. It's not a fluke that everybody has their own little quirks and imperfections that make us all feel normal and loved. We meet Chum, Anchor and Bruce, the trio of sharks on a twelve-step program to recognize fish as friends, not food; Nemo himself has an underdeveloped fin; Marlin has separation issues; and Dory suffers from short-term memory loss.

Paralleling Marlin and Dory's journey is the plight of Nemo himself, who was thrown into a dentist office fish tank where, after a ritualistic ceremony, he is accepted into the tank community. Stanton takes an interesting approach with regards to his depiction of Nemo's fish tank. He confirms the fears that we've always harbored - that the inhabitants actually realize they are being held captive and that their days are spent concocting far-flung escape plans. Time is running out for Nemo however, as his captor has promised him to his niece who can never seem to keep her fish alive for very long.

Finding Nemo is appropriately rated G but I think it transcends its intended audience of pre-schoolers. It is a great movie for all ages, 2 to 82. Many of the jokes are meant for the parents and not a single one falls flat. Some of the films funniest moments come from watching and listening to the secondary characters. To keep the running Pixar mockery alive, we get a glimpse of Buzz Light Year, Sully, the Pizza Planet truck and a few other characters from previous Pixar features. Gill, a Moorish Idol fish, was voiced by Willem Dafoe. His character was very reminsicent of Sgt. Bob Barnes of Platoon, complete with facial scar. Not sure of the connection, but made me think anyway.

I found myself absolutely mesmerized by the beautiful underwater vistas and the engaging story. The charismatic spark provided by the characters coupled with the genuine heart put into the story, make Finding Nemo the best movie of the year and the first "must see" for 2003. Oh, and by the way, don't leave the theater until the after the credits have run.
