Movie Review

Guest Review by A.J. Gonzalez

First of all, I will admit to not being a fan of scary movies, so my comments may be a bit biased, but I was a bit disappointed with this movie. I went to see The Ring under the recommendation from friends who said this is the scariest movie that many of them had ever seen and that they guaranteed that it would frighten me. While it had its moments, overall I was quite let down and definitely wasn't scared.

The Ring, a remake of a 1998 Japanese film, stars Naomi Watts (Mulholland Drive) and Martin Henderson (Windtalkers) and is about a group of teenagers who all die suddenly exactly one week after watching a mysterious videotape at a remote cabin in the Pacific Northwest. Journalist Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts) begins an investigation that leads to a mountain resort where she discovers the tape, which contains inexplicable and random images. After viewing the tape, Rachel receives a phone call stating that she too, has just seven days left to live.

The Ring will get your adrenaline pumping, but I was expecting there to be much more fright and horror. In spite of horrifying imagery, electrifying fright scenes, and an intense climax, I found myself uttering "is it over yet?" One particular scene, involving the killing of a horse was actually quite disturbing, but overall The Ring is quite predictable and disappointing.

I also noticed the continuation of a recently popular but annoying trend in horror movies – the young, adorable child who, just as the suspense is building, utters a calm but chilling line that cuts the tension like a knife.

Although I'm not a fan of fright movies, I was indeed entertained by the plot of The Ring despite the fact that I didn't find it all that scary. I give it a relatively significant Get Lucky factor so, guys, take your girlfriend, she'll be at your side during the entire movie.
