I just returned home from watching Signs and it was such a great movie that I had to write a review as soon as possible. It will be hard to put down in words how much I liked it, but here goes....Being a kid who grew up (and is still growing up) believing in aliens, and aliens being the only thing that frightens me, this movie had an especially intense effect on me. Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, I was expecting his typical characteristic that we have seen before in The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable of introducing a philosophical theme, teasing us along and then ending it with some sort of a plot twist. In fact, I was thinking that Signs might be very predictable. I was dead wrong.
Shyamalan takes us through the story, showing us what we need to see and leaving us genuinely terrified. I typically hate scary movies because I usually find them very nonfrightening. For example, in movies like Scream, the killer was so nonfrightening that I wanted to join the story and meet him at his next stop. It was as if I could predict where the killer was going as well as where the plot was going. This was not the case in Signs.
Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix are both very convincing in their roles as well as Rory Culkin, one of the two younger brothers of Home Alone's MacCaulay Culkin. Additionally, what could add more to a movie than a really adorable little girl with her lines that leave you gasping in your seat with cold fright? Shyamalan really knows how to tell a story where everything seems to fit and with an ending that leaves you completely satisfied. Signs is a marvelous movie and I suggest that everyone see this one, except for younger viewers as it will definitely frighten them….even the older ones. Guest Review by AJ Gonzalez
