Dallas/Fort Worth Film Critics Association Names "Return of the King" Best Picture of 2003

The winner is The Lord of the Rings; the Return of the King; rounding out the composite list of the top ten films of the year are 2-Cold Mountain; 3-Mystic River; 4-Lost in Translation; 5-Finding Nemo; 6-American Splendor; 7-In America; 8-Big Fish; 9-Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World; and 10-The Last Samurai.

Best Actor - The winner is Sean Penn for Mystic River; runners up are 2-Bill Murray for Lost in Translation; 3-Ben Kingsley for House of Sand and Fog; 4-Johnny Depp for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl; and 5-Paul Giamatti for American Splendor.

Best Actress - The winner is Charlize Theron for Monster; runners up are 2-Nicole Kidman for Cold Mountain; 3-Diane Keaton for Something's Gotta Give; 4-Scarlett Johansson for Lost in Translation; 5-Naomi Watts for 21 Grams.

Best Supporting Actor - The winner is Alec Baldwin for The Cooler; the runners-up are 2-Tim Robbins for Mystic River; 3-Ken Watanabe for The Last Samurai; 3-Albert Finney for Big Fish; and 5-Peter Sarsgaard for Shattered Glass.

Best Supporting Actress - The winner is Renee Zellweger for Cold Mountain; the runners-up are 2-Patricia Clarkson for Pieces of April; 3-Marcia Gay Harden for Mystic River; 4-Holly Hunter for Thirteen; and 5-Ludivine Sagnier for Swimming Pool.

Best Director - The winner is Peter Jackson for The Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King. Next in the voting is 2-Clint Eastwood for Mystic River followed by 3-Anthony Minghella for Cold Mountain; 4-Sofia Coppola for Lost in Translation; and 5-Tim Burton for Big Fish.

Foreign Language Film - The winner is City of God; the runners-up are 2-The Barbarian Invasions; 3-The Triplets of Belleville; 4-Together; and 5-Man on the Train.

Best Documentary - The winner is Capturing the Friedmans. The runners up are; 2-The Fog of War; 3-Winged Migration; 4-Spellbound; and 5- To be and To Have.

Best Animated Film - The winner is Finding Nemo.

Best Cinematography - The winner is Andrew Lesnie for The Lord of the Rings; The Return of the King.

Worst Film of the Year - The winner is Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat.

Russell Smith Award - named for the late Dallas Morning News film critic. The honor is given annually to the best low-budget or cutting-edge independent film. The winner is Americn Splendor.
