Summer 2007 Movie Preview
Ok, we endured another dead season. You know, the time of year when the movie studios dump all their stinkers into the theaters hoping to catch starved movie goers off guard to pick up a few quick bucks. So with the Norbits' and The Reapings' behind us, it's time to settle down with our popcorn and Milk Duds and get serious about movies.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End – 2 wasn't as good as 1 - but it was much, much longer. Will the trend continue? Georgia Rule – Jane Fonda and Lindsey Lohan on the same screen? Get ready for the chemistry, er fireworks! Even Money – Just like Crash but with gambling... and with Kim Basinger. Ooo la la. Shrek The Third – Could this be Gingerbread man's breakout hit? Or will Puss continue his reign? Tune in to find out. The Ex – Arrested Development and Scrubs all mixed together inside a Braff and Peet sandwich. Delicious!
28 Weeks Later – Is Danny Boyle involved or is he not? Studio says yes, Boyle says no. Watch the movie and decide for yourself. Bug – Horror starring Ashley Judd and Harry Connick, Jr. Director William Friedkin doesn't call it a horror movie, but then again he said his The Exorcist wasn't a horror film either. Guess what folks...Bug is a horror film. Lucky You – Eric Bana and Drew Barrymore poker drama, two years in the making. Uh oh... smells like trouble. The Wendell Baker Story – A Luke and Owen Wilson comedy piece along with other brother Andrew Wilson. 10 years in the making...uh oh smells like even bigger trouble! Delta Farce – Larry the Cable Guy to impart his humor on the Iraq war. Count me out! September Dawn – A love story that takes place in the 1850's when the Mormons massacred Arkansas settlers. I wonder what the argument was amount - who could gather the most wives? 
Ocean's 13 – Jeez! How much more can they ring out of this franchise? Was Ocean's Eleven really that good to begin with? Live Free or Die Hard – Willis shaves down for yet another installment of his John McLane. But the times haven't passed McLane by however, as he must now save New Jersey from cyberterrorists. You Kill Me – At an AA meeting, Ben Kingsley falls in love with Tea Leoni. Hey, get in line buddy!
Day Watch – The sequel to the Russian-horror fantasy hit Day Watch. Send some love Russia's way and check this one out. Ratatouille – Will Pixar and Brad Bird be able to drum up the magic yet again? Early buzz hints at production problems and creative differences. Uh oh! Are we looking at the first chink in the desk lamp studio's armor? Evan Almighty – The $150 million follow-up to Bruce Almighty without Jim Carrey. Sounds like a risky proposition to me. But if it has animals wearing pants, I'm in! Sicko – This time Michael Moore takes on the health care industry. This guy sure doesn't shy away from hot-button issues does he? Wonder if the title also has anyting to do with the health care industry?
Nancy Drew – Will we finally get a worthwhile live-action version of the famous literary sleuth? Warner Bros. has already greenlit a sequel, so I guess we should assume this one will be a hit. Surf's Up – Enough of the penguins already! But then again I said the same thing before Happy Feet hit the theaters. Ok, let's give it one more try.
Hostel: Part II – Director Eli Roth promises even more blood than the prequel. Do humans really have that much blood? Martian Child – Big Daddy meets K-Pax? Stars John Cusack and Amanda Peet. Fido – A PG-13 zombie horror film. Interested in seeing how they plan on pulling that concept off!
The Simpson's Movie – Isn't the series funny enough? Are we expecting something better than the TV version has already supplied? Seems to me like it's destined for a very chilly reception. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix – Director David Yates is set to give the franchise a whirl. Oh boy! Can't wait to see Harry get his first kiss. I Know Who Killed Me – If Lindsey Lohan puts as much effort into this film as she did into her partying, This film is destined for greatness. License to Wed – Robin Williams as a priest? What's next Ringo Star as the Pope? Oh wait. No Reservations – Remake of Mostly Martha that was made in 2001. has it been long enough? I'm not that excited. But it does star Abigail Breslin. Talk to Me – Everything Don Cheadle touches turns to gold. Hairspray – John Travolta takes a hand-off from Eddie Murphy and dons the rubber fat suit. Can we finally hang up the rubber fat suit? Rubber fat suits aren't funny any more.
Rescue Dawn - Grizzly Man's Werner Herzog tells the story of a Viet Nam P.O.W. "What a big P.O.W." "He's such a happy P.O.W." Transformers – Who can kick whose ass - the Transformer fanboys or the Mutant Turtle fanboys? I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry – Two guys (Adam Sandler and Kevin James) fake a gay marriage to cop free marriage benefits. Think this subject matter will stir up some hornets' nests? The Strangers – Liv Tyler does horror. I'm in! Broken English – Being positioned as a sleeper alternative to a bloated July Box Office. Hey, if it has Parker Posey in it, why not?
The Invasion – James Bond does an alien invasion flick. Rumors have it they had to go back and do some reshoots after production wrapped. Never a good sign. El Cantante – A biopic about Puerto Rican salsa legend Hector Lavoe. Anyone ever heard of this guy? The Ten – Winona Ryder does the ten commandments. Hmmm... must be a comedy! Resurrecting The Champ – A highly fictionalized retelling of the fictional story of a down and out boxer starring Samuel L. Jackson and Josh Hartnett. The Comebacks – First there was Scary Movie. Then came Epic Movie. Now we have The Comebacks.
Rush Hour 3 – Chris Rock and Jackie Chan star in the third installment of a franchise that died 2 prequels ago. Might be proof that Mike Judge was on to something when he made Idiocracy. Stardust – Big screen adaptation of Neil Gaiman's novel of the same name. I always knew Claire Danes was as beautiful as a celestial body. The Brothers Solomon – Originally developed to be a Satirday Night Live skit. Something tells me this one will be a bit skimpy on material. Halloween – Find out what made Michael Myers such an angry man. Rob Zombie directs.
The Hottest State – Stars Mark Webber and Catalina Sandino. A romance about an aspiring actor who falls in love with a beautiful musician. Interesting huh? Charlie Bartlett – About a high school entrepreneur who sets up a drug selling operation in the boy's bathroom. Don't laugh. That's not too far-fetched.
