Anyone alive during the era knows how big, as well as how important, the so-called “battle of the sexes” was back in the early ’70s.
It was not only a tennis match that pitted once-number-1-now-retired tennis player, Bobby Riggs against a series of female pros who he publicly declared were inferior, but was also a resounding landmark moment felt throughout the feminist movement of the time.
In the match, Riggs played Billy Jean King in front of a sold-out crowd at the Astrodome. The match was hyped for months ahead of time and lived up to that publicity with a match for the ages between the reserved King and the boisterous, self-promoting, male chauvinist pig Riggs.
Well, Fox Searchlight has made a movie of the event and boy did they nail the casting that features Oscar-winner Emma Stone as Billie Jean King and Steve Carell as Bobby Riggs.
The film is called, appropriately enough, Battle of the Sexes and is directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris from a script by Simon Beaufoy of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire fame. Of course Dayton and Faris are the writing duo behind the genius of Little Miss Sunshine, so we know the film’s pedigree is rock solid, while the brilliant cast is rounded out by Elisabeth Shue and Sarah Silverman.
